Having Thin Hair can often become a struggle. Stylists are either frying it with the curling iron, ripping the knots out while also taking half your hair along with it, or even over-bleaching it until its so frizzy and damaged it might as well fall off… When having thin hair it’s definitely a lot harder to find a stylist that knows and understands how to handle someone with thin fine hair that is a delicate and lifeless mess. Below are Top 5 tips for fooling the world into thinking you have a thick head full of hair that is fabulous!
1. Get The Right Hair Cut
Unfortunately, if you have thin hair you’re pretty limited to the types of hair cuts you can get. The best haircuts for thin hair are short, blunt, and long square layers. If the hair is texturized too much or given too many layers this will cause the hair to look even thinner. When our eyes see a straight line our brains automatically think weight and structure. Creating that blunt, strong line around the perimeter of the hair will give the appearance of thicker, stronger hair.
2. Be very Gentle with Your Hair When its Wet
Thin Hair is very delicate naturally, but add water to it and it becomes even more fragile. When any hair type encounters water it becomes easily stretched. When we yank a brush through our wet fragile tangled hair all we are doing is stretching and breaking our hair. A great tip to avoid this is to use a light leave-in like our Unnnique After Care Leave-In, The After Care Leave-In will help deposit the proteins your hair needs to remain healthy and hydrated. After Applying the Leave-in, DO NOT BRUSH YOUR HAIR!!! Take your blow dryer and lightly dry from roots to ends of your hair gently running your fingers through it. As your hair drys it untangles and you are not ripping your hair with a brush. When it is 80% dry, section off the hair and style as you’d like.
3. Get Highlights
I know this may sound counterintuitive when having thin hair but… We aren’t saying go crazy and fry your hair with highlights all over, but getting a beautiful balayage from a stylist who is gentle and experience with thin hair can do wonders. Highlighted hair causes the cuticle to get slightly roughed up. This gives the hair some texture and volume, creating the illusion of fuller and thicker hair. You’ll also notice that with highlights your hair tends to hold curls and styles longer than with no highlights at all.
4. Invest in a good Blow Drying Spray
Try and Find a good Blow Drying spray that is light and will allow movement… like our Xpress Blow Dry. This Spray will do wonders for your hair, It will not only minimize your drying time while also removing frizz and adding shine and hydration but it will have your hair looking voluminous and beautiful. Follow these steps when drying your hair, Before your start to blow dry, spray the Xpress Blow Dry on the mid-lengths of your hair and down to the tips, massage the spray onto the tips. Don’t go too overboard, you don’t want to weigh the hair down but spray just enough so you feel a slight bit of texture as it drys. Flip your head over and dry the hair in the opposite direction it grows for an added volume. But remember to wait until the very end when you are ready for the round brush.
5. Use a Dry Shampoo
Use a Dry Shampoo, If you were not aware of this than you will be now. Thinner hair gets greasier Faster, but if you could hold off on washing your hair every other day and invest in a good dry shampoo, you can get great volume in your hair. Dry Shampoo can help give you hair enough grit and texture for day two hair and it gives it that tousled lived in look that is so popular now. Take small sections around the crown area and spray the dry shampoo about 6-8” away from the scalp. Repeat wherever you feel your hair needs it and let it sit for two to three minutes to absord the oils. Then flip your hair over and brush your hair from root to ends. Boom! There you go, you have instant Volume!
